Barry "The Man" Manilow

So here I am coming out of hiding to cheer on my long-ago crush, Barry Manilow. Whether he declined the invite or was disinvited is not that important, but Manilow did not appear on The View because he refused to be interviewed by Republican Goddess Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Directly from the "latest news" portion of Manilow's website, complete with a misspelling of Hasselbeck's name:

I wanted to let you know that I will no longer be on The View tomorrow as scheduled. I had made a request that I be interviewed by Joy, Barbara or Whoopi, but not Elisabeth Hasselback. Unfortunately, the show was not willing to accommodate this simple request so I bowed out.

It’s really too bad because I've always been a big supporter of the show, but I cannot compromise my beliefs.

When you write the songs, you don't have to suffer fools gladly.

Sherri believes that the world is flat, and Elisabeth uses bad circular reasoning...but for Joy, I would have tuned out long ago.

And Barbara rarely shows up! Beyond her photo and some of the buzz about her joining the show, I have no idea who Sherri is. Frankly, I haven't seen the show in quite a while. I saw a few Rosie episodes, but that's all. Daytime and late-night TV have all but evaporated from my life. Why am I finding time management so difficult these days? I have no time but also get nothing done. Can't blame it on blogging...I'm hardly doing that.

I wonder, however, if Manilow's action will start a trend -- progressive celebrities snubbing the show. I guess they'd have to have as much gravitas as Manilow, who can get himself booked on any show he wants, really.

One of the things I enjoyed about old-style View was how easily Meredith, Star, Joy, and (more gently) Barbara could deflate Elisabeth's arguments. I don't characterize her as bad at argumentation because she's Republican. She's bad at argumentation because she's bad at argumentation. (That may sound like circular reasoning, but I assure you it's not!)

Ok. Now I've researched Sherri.

Whoa. I thought you were being metaphoric or something.

Indeed she needs to get to the library.

I have a confession to make: yes, I tape THE VIEW every day, and watch it as a marathon when I get the chance. Guilty pleasure, which I am enjoying less and less these days. I think I shall switch to OPRAH, since I can only do one. JC wants me to tape CONAN O'BRIEN on your recommendation, and particularly since he won the Emmy for best writing. You have good taste, Bitty!

Hee hee! If I didn't know who JC was, I'd think you were getting messages from God!

Sometimes Conan bombs, but he's far funnier than Leno, for instance. He's also more cutting edge. He was showcasing Ozzy Osbourne, for instance, before Ozzy got his show.

Well, it's been nice talking to you on my blog since we never get to do it in person!
